Vix Knits… and crochets and sews…

My adventures in the wonderful world of arts and crafts

Button brooches!

on October 23, 2014

I have a new obsession and it combines two of my favourite things – buttons and crochet!

And it gives me a beautiful use for my beautiful buttons… although it does mean some of them will leave my company to be loved by others.

Anyway, it all began when I bought a new winter coat. I decided to go for a fairly neutral grey and jazz it up with assorted accessories.

And then we went to the Knitting and Stitching Show and I bought a gorgeous big wooden button

Rather lovely even on it’s own I think but I’m so in love with my new Pieces of Eight mittens that I wanted something to match.

So I made this

But the yarn doesn’t really lend itself to the pattern particularly well so I procrastinated a little while I was blocking the flower.

In the meantime, I found something amazing on Facebook and made this

Isn’t this the most fantastic idea?! The original piece I saw only had one round of petals but I wanted something a bit frillier.

I tried really hard (for about three hours!) to do the same with the big button but the yarn is too thin for it to work the way I want it to.

After blocking, I’m still unsure about the big button and the knitted flower. I think every time I look at it, I’ve changed my mind again!

So here are three different button options for you to ponder

I wonder if my issue is not the button but the flower…

And now I’m off to raid my button stash for more suitable beauties!
